In light of the upcoming primary elections, attached is a primer on the FCC’s current political advertising rules . It includes a model disclosure statement regarding a system’s political advertising rates and practices. Keep in mind that your state may impose separate requirements on political ads (e.g., regarding sponsorship identification).
In order to fully prepare, you should determine the relevant federal, state and local offices that will be subject to election this year, the election dates, and the periods during which the FCC=s “lowest unit charge” requirements will apply. Further, you should review and update your system’s political advertising disclosure statement and political file (note that you only need to retain materials in that file for two years). Finally, you should discuss your system’s political policies and the FCC requirements with your sales personnel.
We would be pleased to respond to any questions that you may have on the attached materials or the FCC’s political rules.
